How to Avoid Condensation and Maintain a Dry Home
One of the biggest threats to property here in the UK is condensation, mainly due to the damp climate that constantly hangs over northern Europe and, in this blog, we offer some practical advice on how to prevent condensation and maintain a dry home.
Kitchen solutions
The kitchen in one room in the house where condensation naturally occurs; boiling water and cooking causes moisture to gather in the air, which you can reduce with the following.
- Use pan lids when cooking.
- Turn on extractor fans until all moisture is removed from the room.
- Close kitchen doors until all moisture is removed.
Ventilation is very important, as adequate airflow reduces condensation; if you have condensation issues, we at London Damp Specialists offer effective condensation solutions and we guarantee our work for 30 years.
Bathroom solutions
Another room that generates a lot of condensation, steam from a hot bath or shower quickly accumulates and water vapour settles on walls and window frames. Turn on the extractor fan and leave it on until the room is clear of condensation and make sure you keep the bathroom door closed to confine moisture to the bathroom.
Dry clothes outside
Many people bring their washing in to dry, thanks to the damp and cloudy days that have become the norm, while the clothes might dry a little faster indoors, the moisture will transfer into the air and that causes condensation.
Remove condensation from window frames and glass
Use a dry cloth to wipe condensation wherever it occurs and this will reduce the risk of moisture damage. If your home has a serious condensation problem, the best solution is to replace the windows with double glazed units, which eliminates condensation. One good idea is to leave a dry cloth on every window sill and whenever you notice beads of water forming, remove it before it can damage the frames. Do this for a couple of weeks and it will soon become second nature.
Ventilation
A poorly ventilated house is much more likely to have a condensation problem; at London Damp Specialists, we offer a ventilation flow test, which is part of a comprehensive damp survey that accurately assesses the airflow throughout the home. Opening windows on a regular basis is always a good idea, although people are reluctant to do this during the winter, for obvious reasons.
Heat the whole house
We totally understand why you wouldn’t want to heat rooms that you don’t use, but every few days, turn on all the radiators to warm up the whole house. A couple of hours is enough to remove moisture and eliminate condensation and that won’t add too much to your energy bills.
Condensation is a very real threat to UK properties and if you take note of the above information, you can eliminate condensation from your home.
